Rath Yatra 2024: Chariot At Bengal’s Raiganj To Be Modelled After Karnataka’s Murudeshwar Temple

In West Bengal’s Raiganj, preparations are underway with fervour to create a majestic Golden Chariot that pays homage to the South Indian tradition. It is set to become the centrepiece of this year’s Rath Yatra. Valued at an estimated Rs 10 lakh, this chariot is being meticulously crafted from neem and sal wood, known for their durability and traditional significance. The initiative has gained significant momentum, particularly in Raiganj’s Beltala area of Debinagar, where skilled artisans are dedicatedly shaping every detail of this cultural marvel. The inspiration for this endeavour stems from Champak Brahma and his wife’s transformative visit to the Murudeshwar Temple in Karnataka four years ago, where they were deeply moved by the grandeur of the temple chariot. Motivated by this experience, they initiated the Rath Yatra in Raiganj, sparking a community effort to recreate a similar chariot that would symbolise devotion and cultural heritage.

TMC, BJP spar over I-T search at Raiganj MLA’s residence

Income tax (I-T) department officials on Wednesday conducted simultaneous day-long searches on premises linked to TMC leader Krishna Kalyani — who is still a BJP MLA on paper — in Raiganj, Malda and in Kolkata in connection with alleged disproportionate assets (DA) possessed by him. An industrialist by profession, Kalyani joined the BJP ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly polls and won from Raiganj Assembly constituency on a BJP ticket in Uttar Dinajpur district. However, later in 2021, he joined the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) but officially remained a BJP legislator. Despite the BJP asking him to resign from the post, Kalyani refused to do so and even claimed that he was withthe BJP. As he is a BJP MLA on paper, Kalyani was made the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in the state Assembly in 2022, a chair that is by convention occupied by an MLA from the opposition bench. According to I-T department officials, search operations were conducted at multiple locations linked to the MLA and his business partner in Raiganj, Malda and Kolkata against complaints of alleged disproportionate assets.

Read Time:4 mins Share BJP MLA Krishna Kalyani said his grievances were “disregarded” by the party leadership. (File) Kolkata: BJP MLA from Raiganj, Krishna Kalyani, on Friday announced he has decided to dissociate himself from the party as it was impossible for him to work for common people with the saffron camp’s MP and former Union minister Debasree Chowdhury “running the show” in the region. The Trinamool Congress was quick to extend an invitation to him to join the fold. Mr Kalyani told reporters in Raiganj that Ms Chowdhury had hatched conspiracies against him to ensure his defeat in the assembly polls held earlier in the year. “Raiganj MP Debasree Choudhury has been conspiring against me for a long time now. She has called me a traitor, but in reality she is the one to have hatched a conspiracy to ensure my defeat from Raiganj as it suited her personal agenda,” Mr Kalyani claimed. Alleging that his grievances were “disregarded” by the state and the central leadership, Mr Kalyani said that “it is in the fitness of things that I dissociate myself from the party. The decision comes in force with immediate effect”. He, however, did not specify if he has already sent the resignation letter to the top brass. Mr Kalyani further stated that he has no plan to join the ruling Trinamool Congress as of now, and “my only wish is to serve the people of my constituency, which seems impossible in the BJP with that one person (Ms Choudhury) running the organisation here.”
